Aotearoa Lawyers' for Peace invite you to a public lecture

Indian Cabinet Minister and PNND member Sri Mani Shankar Aiyar will give a free lecture at the Auckland University on the Rajiv Gandhi Action Plan for Nuclear Abolitition. This event will be held from 5:30 on Wednesday the 28th March. Venue: School of Engineering, lecture theatre 3.401. 20 Symonds Street- Auckland.

World Court Project

In 1996 the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that the threat or use of nuclear weapons is generally illegal and that there is an obligation to eliminate these weapons. New Zealand lawyers and activists were instrumental in this ruling. Aotearoa Lawyers for Peace (ALP) is now working on a follow-up case in the ICJ on implementation of the earlier decision.

Judge Weeramantry tour

In 2000, ALP arranged a speaking tour for Judge Weeramantry, former Vice-President of the World Court. The judge spoke to the Foreign Affairs Select Committee, a United Nations Conference and capacity crowds in Wellington and Christchurch.

Nuclear Weapons Convention

ALP member Alyn Ware, along with Israeli-American Merav Datan, coordinated the drafting of a Model Nuclear Weapons Convention (NWC). This has now been circulated by the United Nations as a discussion document. ALP is also active in promoting negotiations for a NWC at the United Nations and amongst governments.

International Criminal Court

ALP members Alan Webb and Alyn Ware participated in the negotiations in New York and Rome to establish and International Criminal Court (ICC). ALP has helped Pacific governments in the ratification process.

Harold Evans Memorial Collection

ALP Chairperson Simon Reeves has worked with the Auckland District Law Society Library to establish the Harold Evans Memorial Collection on nuclear weapons and law. Justice Evans pioneered the World Court Project and other disarmament initiatives.
